Structure-Borne Sound Monitoring
Sound that propagates through a solid body is referred to as structure-borne sound. This sound can be used to monitor grinding machine processes. When the grinding wheel comes into contact with the workpiece, structure-borne sound is generated. The intensity and frequency of the generated sound depend on various factors, including grinding performance, the structure of the grinding wheel, the rotational speeds of the grinding wheel and workpiece, and the workpiece material.
Structure-borne sound monitoring is available in several variants. ELASO offers a suitable sensor for every grinding machine, enabling users to achieve the best possible results.
GAP Control
The main application of structure-borne sound monitoring is GAP control. GAP stands for Grinding Analysis Process and is used to monitor and optimize grinding processes. This technology reduces unwanted air-cutting time while accurately detecting contact between the grinding wheel and the workpiece, allowing the grinding process to begin at the right moment.
Dressing Control
During grinding wheel dressing, a structure-borne sound signal is generated, just as it is during grinding. If interruptions occur in the structure-borne sound signal during dressing, this may indicate irregularities or depressions on the grinding wheel surface, suggesting that the wheel has not yet been sufficiently dressed.
Collision Monitoring
To minimize or prevent machine damage, potential collisions within the machine must be detected or predicted. In certain situations, this is possible through structure-borne sound monitoring. A collision is assumed to generate a strong structure-borne sound signal. The amplifier in the control unit can be used to provide an output signal for collision detection.
